What we've learned from each SMP
From each Minecraft SMP attempt our friend group has created, we experimented with different variables, including loose rules, a strong political system, and faction creation.
From each Minecraft SMP attempt our friend group has created, we experimented with different variables, including loose rules, a strong political system, and faction creation.
In the 1st SMP, it was the first large Minecraft SMP we created with friends in the Asian Server Discord. It took place from November 11th, 2020, to February 17th, 2021, lasting three months.
The rules were quite simple and standard to any basic SMP. There was no predetermined or structured political system until the server collectively decided to hold a mayoral election and create a court system. The self-created lore, such as Mr. Moo Moo and his illegal activities, created a lasting impact and made the SMP enjoyable. Something unique about the 1st SMP is this self-created lore, as SMPs in the future have had relatively no similar lore, and we have yet to employ a predetermined lore track. The next SMP with considerable lore is the 4th SMP, when predetermined factions were made.
Many unique builds were created, such as the collectively built town hall, Mall of Asia, Mount Pickton, Community Castle, and others.
It must be noted that this SMP took place during 2020, when we had either full synchronous or hybrid school days. This anomaly may have contributed to a more active server compared to servers in the future, especially during the school session.
The 2nd SMP occurred in the summer months of 2021 and featured the Caves and Cliffs Update: Part 1. Similar to the 1st SMP, there was no predetermined political system of governance, though Pickyman was anticipating carrying over the court system to the next SMP. The lack of governance likely contributed to the quick collapse of the 2nd SMP.
On day one of the 2nd SMP, the server experienced tension as some players immediately sped-run the game, acquiring advanced gear rather than focusing on cultivating and building the world like the majority of players intended. Items were also stolen from several players. These immediate issues led players such as GodspeedAssassin and Pickyman to withdraw from the SMP.
The total disorder that was the 2nd SMP resulted in Pickyman drafting an SMP Plan and full-scale constitution for the 3rd SMP, to employ a strong political system with limits on world progression.
On December 6th, 2021, Pickyman formed the Provisional Government to finalize the 3rd SMP Constitution. The complex political process established powerfully enforced server rules and created an official process to propose and enact rules. However, the complexity and slow nature of the government probably caused slow engagement in the server, resulting in a steep decline in activity by the time RiceMaster's Presidency began three months in (March 12th, 2022). Not to mention the world progression limits likely inadvertently caused regression for players to engage fully in the server. Despite the Judicial Congress (the legislative body of the 3rd SMP) passing Progression Acts like the Nether Act, Enchantment Act, and Villager Act, player activity fell as January 2022 continued. The last Progression Act was the Villager Act, which still prohibited "actively looking for diamonds (and strip mining); Netherite; and exploring Nether bastions."
The 3rd SMP uniquely had a world theme, that being cave-themed, as the SMP came after the release of Caves and Cliffs Update: Part 2 (the update that officially added new cave generation).
Several unique builds were made; however, many, like the Capitol and Treasury buildings, were prebuilt. The Shopping Mall, The Karst, The House, and other structures were neat builds on the server.
